As beef prices continue to rise in the U.S., the government is increasing its investigation of foreign-owned beef companies and their role in the crisis
Good article, but it would have been more complete with a brief discussion of the ridiculous big company lobbied rules regarding meat processing. Local ranchers ought to be able to process their own meat locally and bring it to market. Period, full stop. But they aren't allowed to, because... assholes, I mean congress.
In my state, farmers are doing that very thing. They are marketing grass fed and finished meat from farm to market, albeit it private homes not the grocery stores. People would like a healthy option and farmers need to have the ability to have their herds processed locally and sold to local grocery stores. This would be a winner for all involved from farm to table.
We now buy just about all of our meat (beef, chicken, pork, lamb) from a (used to be) regional provider that sources only from pasture fed, grass fed and finished farmers and ranchers.
Another part of the problem with the consolidation of the Big Meat conglomerates...is that they overshadow the local communities. The rancher that wants to go to a local finisher for example. And, federal and state laws, paid for by Big Meat, that restrict how local operations can function.
The local meat processor has all but disappeared. The local farmer has to drive their cattle hundreds of miles to get them processed. This problem is compounded by the government. Bring back local processing, it would be a start for local ranchers.
Thank you President Trump and Secretary Rollins for seeking to prevent foreign owned meatpackers from eliminating competition and illegally raising prices.
In listening to Secretary Rollins earlier today she says the cattleman have never been happier than now with such DEMAND for their product. The issue is HERD SIZE that has to be built up in America and not thru importing. Everyone I know WANTS quality BEEF products going forward. We KNOW Bill Gates hates hearing that! LOL
...and my brother was wondering why I was begging for more deer meat the past 2 years! A senior on social security needs protein, but the price of roast beef kept giving me sticker shock. NOW I KNOW WHY! AND A FOREIGN COMPANY BOUGHT MY FAVORITE BACON PRODUCER...SMITHFIELD. WE NEED TO KICK THEM ALL OUT OF AMERICA. BACK INTO BRAZIL!
It is NOT the high ground. Millions of animals are killed each making the plant food that you eat. Birds, mice, rabbits, deer, cats, voles, rats, mice, snakes, lizards, frogs, and too many to list, are blown up, drowned, poisoned, trapped, shot, burned, and crushed. Try watching a video of a bird trying to stop a combine from crushing its nest. Just that one thing is heartbreaking.

Just when you typed this I sent the same comment. Yours is more polite. Totally agree.

I'm not laughing.
Food is a national security concern; there should be ZERO foreign owned companies selling food in the United States without 100% tariffs.

Foreign-owned is not the problem, Bill Gates is! Ban fake, toxic meat.
Beef prices are off the charts! Regulations restricting farmers from processing their own beef need revision.
By the time you’re done investigating, we’re broke
It is positively barbaric to raise and kill cows, hiding behind the ephemism "beef"
It is dead cow carcass.
Howz about stop the killing?
Industrial plant agriculture kills millions of animals every year. Get off your moralizing high horse and learn what plant agriculture really is.
not a "high horse" it is however the high road.
Some of us grow food. Some kill animals. Some like slabs of
dead animal on styrofoam
One is a far better choice.

High Road is simply making the best possible decision.
As heart breaking as slitting the throats for your dinner plate?
Do not eat anything needing a combine. Certainly none of the laundry list of animals that you somehow implicate. Your logic is profoundly inane.
Many decades on the right side of non killing to include expertise on the health consequences. Doctorate in Biology. What else ya got??
