It's pretty fascinating how marketing can break through and turn-off someone's instincts. But not an animals. Great story, thank you for putting it out there.
Thanks John Klar!! Your report should give people who are eating processed 'garbage' something to think about. In 1961, after I was handed a book about the danger of SUGAR leading to HYPERACTIVITY ...and a doctor who prescribed tranquilizers for my 4 year old son...with a SIDE EFFECT of STUNTING ORGAN GROWTH...I got into the study of eating for health. I eliminated sugar, white flour, and read labels...eliminating food, with additives. In 1973, I stopped buying food with labels...and only ate natural unprocessed. Over the years, I eliminated more and more foods...and wound up getting healthier! I feel better mentally and physically going on 92 than I felt in my 20s and 30s.
Great lesson for instinctive power of Nature but one giant error in characterizing the junk food. There is almost NO Sugar in these products it is all Roundup Ready GMO high fructose corn syrup and HFCS gets a pass with misclassification as sugar.
It also ignores the GMO novel proteins and toxic glyphosate and other pesticides & herbicides. Colors are bad but the biggest enemy is never noted Rockefeller - Gates - Biotech Mafia patent protected GMOs.
I had a rat living in my back porch once. A black rat, if you care. He liked the Mutsu apples I stored there during the cold months. I gave up Mini-Wheats and rather than toss them in the garbage I spread them out on places Ivan could easily get them. But he never touched them which sort of shocked me. Loved sunflower seeds most, but the sugar coated, high-fiber health food he left alone.
There are a few videos on social media showing rats and ants not eating the junk food in the trash. I read that the junk food was processed with chemical scents to mimic dead ants and the ants wouldn't touch it. Not sure why the rats wouldn't touch the junk food either but rats have incredible keen sense of smells and the junk food smell bad to them. Imagine that, rats live in the sewer and they reject human junk food. We human don't have the same level of olfactory capacity and we are easily fooled by the junk food.
Yeah I find myself wondering if it's that the junk food is *lacking* a smell that indicates it has nutrition they would want, or if it's putting off a really bad smell that indicates it would not be good for them.
I suspect all the preservatives are chemicals that can be sensed by rats. The same with artificial sweeteners, they are sweet but they are 100% chemicals. Even pure cane sugar was at one time grew on sugar cane stalks. The artificial sweeteners were concocted inside the labs.

Truly amazing. Thanks John. I just finished my Raw Milk and Biodynamic Yogurt to start the day!!
The pig with dirt on his snout reminds of a guy I grew up with named Ralph.
Ralph would eat anything.
Thanks John. "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others."
And then there are seagulls who will eat just about anything.
Thanks John, on the farm we notice that also. If you want to catch a rat use cheese.

Please don't sic your dogs on the rats as they have a hard enough life being who they are.
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful,
The Lord God made them all
