I’m hoping that this passes in New Hampshire and it starts to trend throughout the country! When I was a child, my paternal grandfather, owned a grocery store in a small town in Louisiana. The store contained a meat market and my father worked for him as a butcher. My grandfather raised his own beef on land he owned in the country and slaughtered the cattle, processed the meat, and sold it at the meat market in the store. My grandfather gifted my father with an acre of land located not far from the slaughter house and that’s where we lived. When my dad slaughtered cattle, my mother would walk us to the slaughter house so we could pick the meat that we wanted to eat for supper that night, plus she would get other cuts she wanted to cook throughout the week. Freshly slaughtered beef! Various cuts of beef were sold in-store. Sides of beef hung in the big refrigerated cooler. My dad cut roasts, round steaks, tenderloins, steaks, etc., as needed. I don’t recall that anyone ever got sick or died from eating this farm-raised, grass fed, natural beef. Then the government came in and there was no longer any raising and slaughtering of cattle, no more selling the meat. It had to be purchased from a centralized, government-inspected slaughterhouse for resale at the meat market; the government started coming in and inspecting the meat market, as well. By that time, my grandfather retired and my father took over the store. I was too young to know what hardship that may have caused my dad, but I’m sure there was extra cost involved causing meat prices to go up. But, I got to know what it was like to eat meat that came from a source that we knew was natural - we KNEW where the beef came from, how it was raised, slaughtered. It would be great if the independent meat producer could happen again. Hopefully, New Hampshire becomes the catalyst for nation-wide change.

I used to raise chickens and turkeys. Also bought a side of beef each year from a friend. We did all our own slaughtering and butchering. The kids were fine with it. Plus they got fresh clean meat. Not to mention all fruits and vegetables grown without chemicals.
We live in southern Washington County, Maryland. There are numerous Mennonite farms in the area, both here and across the Potomac in Jefferson County, West Virginia. The Mennonites do their own slaughtering and sell their meat in their market in Martinsburg. It is a flourishing, popular business. You can also buy beef in bulk--whole, half, quarter--from several farms. Some of the farmers sell at farmers' markets. There are also restaurants and local shops that sell beef from local farms. This is a fresh meat paradise, which proves it can be done if the will is there. Washington County is also a cattle breeding center--you see young calves in the fields all over. Some of these farms go back to the 1700s. The University of Maryland also has an extension office--they're advising us on putting in blueberries.
Praying!!!! Hope they can do this with no limits!!! We would not have food without the farmers!

The maximum number that would be locally sold under HB 396 is three cows per month or five pigs per month or 10 sheep or goats.
