After his double bypass heart surgery a year ago caused by his diabetes which he didn’t know he had), he has been following the protocol set out in this article. He has reversed his diabetes has recovery from his heart surgery without any complications. We tossed out all 23 of the prescription drugs he had been sent home with. His cardiologist “fired” him as a patient.

My company, Visiting Angels in Northern Arizona, is a franchised home care organization dedicated to helping people remain safe, supported, and dignified in the place they call home. Our professionally trained caregivers enter homes every day to assist individuals who need help with daily living, companionship, and care. What I witness across Arizona and America is a very real crisis—one that unfolds quietly and repeatedly. Too often, well-intended prescription medications contribute to falls, especially among our seniors. A fall leads to an emergency call, a hospital stay, rehabilitation, and far too often, a path toward long-term decline or hospice care.

Seeing this cycle firsthand compels us to ask an important question: How do we change this trajectory for the next generation? The answer begins with awareness, prevention, compassionate care, and a healthcare system that prioritizes safety, human connection, and proactive support—before a crisis occurs. Together, we can do better. And together, we must. My new podcast: "Make 100 Healthy" is due out in 2026. Let's ALL work together. 1 by 1 we CAN make a difference. God Bless the USA.

Thank you, Catherine! Last month my husband, Ray, was told by his doctor that he needed to lose twenty pounds and lower his glycemic intake. Ray is in excellent shape at 72. His blood pressure and heart rate are enviable. But he has a history of later life diabetes in his family. I cook nearly all our meals and have changed the dishes I make to fit the diet he needs. When I read your piece I was nodding through the list of what you say he needs to eat. I make sure we have the best of those. But I also wanted to make meals that were the most enjoyable he’s ever had. There’s nothing that sabotages a diet more than not enjoying your meals! And also, making meals that are easy so you don’t feel the urge to order in or pick up premade meals. Ray has lost 12 pounds and says he’s never enjoyed my cooking as much. It’s good for me, too. I’m recuperating from nearly dying of severe Septic Shock. I’m just a home cook not a medical professional, but I am writing about it on my Substack https://pollysnewsletter.substack.com/

All very good advice except for the alpha lipoic acid, which Andrew Hall Cutler, PhD, pioneer of heavy metal chelation, called "the natural care community's contribution to the mercury holocaust."

Alpha lipoic acid, along with being a wonderful anti-oxidant, is a fat-soluble, dithiol, chelator. It chelates mercury and also arsenic. If used in large, infrequent doses, it will give people mercury poisoning from moving it around and into the brain.

This is a good article but missing the greater context. It is the SAD (Standard American) diet that is the primary cause of Americas health crisis. So first focus on the things in that diet that need to be eliminated and/or reduced?

1) Highly processed carbohydrates.

2) Highly processed oil. (includes tallow )

3) Factory farmed animals that are filled with pesticides, hormones, and other products. Most Americans do not have access to natural and organic animal products.

And recommend:

A health promoting diet program is based on:

A wide variety of organic cooked and uncooked vegetables, fruits and legumes.

Plus any other natural organic foods. Most deficiencies can be corrected by what is known as a nutrient rich diet.

Yes, sunshine, yoga, meditation, exercise and supplementing based on personal needs can be useful. But let's focus on healthy food for the people! Subsidizing local organic farms will be a huge help.

Nice comprehensive overview of metabolic interventions. The berberine mention is particularly intersting since it activates AMPK (kinda like exercise does at the cellular level) which is why lots of people report similar glucose-lowering effects to metformin. What I find underdiscussed is the timing piece with these supplements. I've seen better outcomes when people split berberine into 2-3 doses before meals rather than one big dose, probably because glucose spikes happen post-meal and halflife isnt that long.
