These drugs are moved quickly to approval but have been studied in ongoing trial extensively as you can read here - https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9553847/

The article concluded with this statement: "Psychedelic therapies represent an exciting opportunity for psychiatry — allowing patients to achieve meaningful improvements in function, symptomatology, and overall outlook in a relatively short amount of time. Though many challenges, several of which we discussed here, lie ahead, we are optimistic about psychedelics’ — and psychiatry’s — future."

This is not what happened with Covid vaccines which were rammed through and mandated. This is a very different scenario. President Trump and Secretary Kenny are acting swiftly to prevent suffering.

What do you mean, "Moved quickly to approval?"

Mourning Warbler's avatar

They want to get that money as soon as possible!!!

That's a four year old article. There been a fair amount of rresesexh and egulatory activity since.

The EO doesn't change the regulations. "Fast track" status has a specific regulatory meaning. Bobby won't be signing off on any psychedelic approvals. Much less ibogaine (unless, perhaps, Trump's family goes into the ibogaine business)

First, thanks for all your great work on the MAHA Report Louis. As a psychotherapist for 35 years, with a father and brother who are/were prominent psychiatrists, I've seen the sad evolution of psychiatry that included pharmaceutical industry takeover and how the corruption of the research into mood disorder drugs also appears in the case of psychedelic "therapeutic" drugs. Ever-increasing research supports that various forms of trauma contribute to a large amount of psychological problems, including the emotional trauma that can lead to depression and other traumas that can contribute to other mood disorders. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, first discovered about 1985 and brought into practice in the 1990s, continues to gain increasing interest worldwide as one of the safest and most effective treatments, when therapists get certified in it and continue getting more training in it.

In Florida a huuge number of children are "Baker Acted." LEO's cuff and transport them to mental hospitals for "examination", most often without parental consent. That kind of trauma could help naughty kids become drug users for life.

Good paper. I read it with interest, and some insight, having had extensive inpatient psychiatric experience, outpatient experience in all of my Family Medicine practices, and the kind of "experience" that Jimmy Hendrix referred to in the album title, "Are You Experienced".

I have had personal communication from an "experienced" Army medic who was called upon to perform special duty. The Army reassured everybody that they did not want to bust them for psychedelic experiences, but needed to know for a mission.

He raised his hand. The US Army was testing psychedelics as crowd control weapons during the Watts Riots.

He said the DMT fog was the most effective. People just sort of wandered away in 5 minutes.

I was in med school in 1985, taking a Radiology rotation, and he was an Ultrasound & Radiology tech.

He told me Vietnam stories, too.

Good guy.

Thanks for your clarification Louis. You're right that it's important to stress that the studies and trials have been extensive. I think the other key point that needs to be reiterated is that great supervision and guidance must go along with the drugs. (Similar to expert shamans when Ayahuasca is used.)

Linda's avatar

The trials with SSRIs were extensive too. This is horrible.

Julie's avatar

Hope you're correct.

Dr. Marian Laderoute's avatar

Wow. I had no idea such an easy solution can be had to end this epidemic! Congrats to the WhiteHouse and Joe Rogan. (One wonders why it took so long?)

Tee Rigodanzo's avatar

It is not a simple easy solution. Whereas I believe it is an excellent one it also needs highly trained, caring and compassionate experts to guide and monitor each patient.

Congratulations to Rick Perry and those who brought ibogaine to his attention-and for Gov Perry for trying it himself, potentially facing conservative christian backlash, & finding brain improvement from pre-treatment. Let’s save our beloved veterans & those addicted by pharma & the china-fed cartels.

John Day MD's avatar

Rick Perry is bound to have needed it. I heard and heard and heard that he did a lot of coke, and likely other drugs (and more), at strip joints for decades here in Austin. I hope ibogaine did him some actual good.

Julie's avatar

What a shame. He's being terribly reckless. Lots of psychedelics have been tested over and over again. The more policy failures he has, the more reckless the president becomes. Knowing this is the United States, there will be a large body of misuse of psychedelics.

Trump Dick Sucker's avatar

This changes (close to) nothing.

Alfalfa's avatar

" ... the country is finally free of laws prohibiting the use of certain psychedelics to treat mental illnesses – laws that have been in effect for more than half a century."

It isn't, at all. Did you read the EO? This doesn't even specify any regulatory pathway change.

Brenon Duff's avatar

Of course it's not perfect, but it's a positive step forward!

First off, I volunteered for Kennedy for President for months as a 60 year-old independent. This turn of events disappoints me though for the MAHA movement. As a teenager I tried psychedelic mushrooms a half dozen times and acid the same amount of times in 12 grade and my first year at Swarthmore College. I saw acid hurt my grades and those of a friend who had transferred from Vanderbilt. It took a year to get only close to my old abilities. I then read about fellow Swarthmore grad Kurt Vonnegut's son, Mark, take about 4 hits of acid and end up in a mental institution for a year. He wrote a book about it called Eden Express. Since then I did over two decades of research to write the book and film, Drugs as Weapons Against Us: The CIA War on Musicians and Activists about the CIA's Project MK-Ultra and LSD, along with other psychedelics and Ecstasy, among other drugs. I found strong connections between the psychedelic-promoting organizations (MAPS, Heftter) and the people involved in MK-Ultra, including their private funding families, such as the Rockefellers. I also wrote and produced the film Shots: Eugenics to Pandemics (2022). RFK Jr seems to know psychiatry is problematic, and MK-Ultra is insidious. It's too bad that he doesn't see the connection between the two. For more information, see Canadian-American psychiatrist Colin Ross's book, CIA Doctors. Working as a psychotherapist for 35 years, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) should be part of the MAHA movement, not problematic psychedelics.

First off we're talking about treating people with mental illness which will include people with PTSD such as our veterans. We're not talking about ignorant young people who played around with things they didn't know about. If you know anyone with serious mental health issues including PTSD you will know that creative measures must be used to combat these present day evils.

Disappointed that only low hanging fruit is being addressed under HHS.

White Coat Waste Project just posted a meeting where secretary Kennedy was asked about the millions of NIH dollars that are still being funded for animal cruelty experiments. Ridgeland Farms breeds beagles to be tortured and killed and funded by NIH. Currently university of Pennsylvania are removing the eyeballs from Beagles. Activist are trying to shut down Ridgeland Farms and hopefully adopted out those 2000 beagles before they get harmed and killed

Wait a freckn minute.

Apparently President Trump has forgotten what happened when he signed a Bill to "Fast-Track" the COVID -19 bullshit. There is a Legit reason to take multiple years to verify medications 😡

As Louis Conte said above, "These drugs are moved quickly to approval but have been studied in ongoing trial extensively as you can read here" - https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9553847/

Just like all the "vaccines" that have been injuring people. But they're safe (pharma can't get sued) and effective (pharma makes a lot of money!).

Tee Rigodanzo's avatar

It also seems that you have forgotten the terrible advisors (on multiple topics) that Trump was influenced by during his first term. Although he never directly apologized for his warp speed shot, he has seriously and completely committed to the entire Maha movement. If you take a deeper dive you'll see that the psychedelics are not simply a quick study but rather have been extensively tested.

John Potash's avatar

To answer Sheryl Nelson and Tee Rigodanzo in a more viewable way, I'll reply here. As the CIA has done on other subjects, they seemed to suppress important studies that showed the negative side of psychedelics. I had to go to several medical school libraries before I found 4 studies that present some form of cerebral damage such as: Hallucinogenic Drugs and Brain Damage (Acord, 1969), Hallucinogenic Drugs and Cerebral Deficit (Acord and Barker, Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease,1973), Organicity Measures Following Repeated LSD Ingestion (McGlothlin, Arnold, Freedman, Archives of General Psychiatry, 1969), and Electrodiagnostic Evidence of Subclinicial Disease States in Drug Abusers (DiBenedetto, Archives of Physical and Medical Rehabilitation, 1976). Again, I also found many studies showing emotional damage from LSD. All four of the cited studies state findings of some sort of brain damage happening, despite not being able to specify how. Cornell University Medical School professor Donald Louria, MD wrote a regular column in the New England Journal of Medicine. In one important column, he wrote an overview of the latest studies in 1968 that I reprinted in my book and will summarize here. He indicated some substantiation to small benefits while dispelling any larger benefits. Louria warned that LSD proponents are "undaunted by the lack of documentation of benefits or the many tragedies caused by the drug... [and] consequent medical and psychiatric tragedies, will almost inevitably occur... [This] could lead to a whole generation of psychedelic dropouts, incapable or uninterested in addressing themselves to the important sociological problems that challenge our times... [This] may well determine the future course of our civilization."

Now Trump needs to do the same thing for kratom!!! It's a life saving plant and needs to be protected. The studies done by Dr. McCurdy all show it's safe and has an extremely low potential for abuse.

I have PTSD, depression and pain now for 34 years. Thank you President Trump for listening to us Americans. I can't remember any President that helped us PATIENTS. Thank you for saving millions. Patient Zero John Prinz

I truly hope you can get in a study & that it helps. I’d love my Navy vet with PTS/TBI to do it. If you haven’t already, watch Rick Perry on Rogan’s podcast. He tried it himself with a pre and post brain MRI amazing results .

Sheryl Nelson's avatar

It’s all good and well until that person stops the medication because they believe they are ‘cured.’ That’s my gut reaction to this news.

It’s a temporary fix. Isn’t there a healthier alternative

Dawn's avatar

It’s a ‘one and done’ experience. I encourage everyone here to go to the Rogan podcasts on Spotify and actually listen to/ hear everything Gov Perry etc say. This is a plant from Gabon(?) Africa & Stamford has been studying their participants with pre and post brain MRIs with stunning results. One time, 85% improvement in brain, no desire to use the substance again. This is not an addictive substance. Please learn. Veterans with PTS and TBIs would benefit greatly-it’s the least we can do for them who put their loves on the line for us every day.

Sheryl Nelson's avatar

I’ll certainly check out the information. Thanks to Tee and Dawn.

Like anything, it's only as good as the user will make it. But my understanding is they will be under serious supervision so that guidance will be given along the way. If you haven't already you'll want to check out Mahamovie.com

What could possibly go wrong?

I have a friend who was prescribed LSD illegally without any warning of its effects, as an experimental treatment for depression in the '60s. She is still furious about it.

If the monster in chief is championing this we will have a lifetime dictator hanging us all separately, while we feel good all by ourselves, how promising for a solid cohesive push for equal opportunities and a more humane lot for scapegoated cultures and oppressed folks everywhere. Somebody somewhere got to feel better in spite of world slavery and totalitarianism. Woo hoo
