hello - I should have mentioned in the article that Jason sold Hu Chocolate in 2021 to the Mendelez company. So he no longer has any say in its ingredients. But thank you for pointing that out and glad you enjoyed the piece. - Dick Russell

SAD! No more Hu for my family.

Suzy Cue's avatar

That was quite an omission. Doesn’t build confidence.

Enjoyed this piece, Dick. I was already a fan of Jason Karp. I do, however, think that more than selling better packaged goods, people need to learn how easy and how much healthier and cheaper it is to cook most of your meals. I’m hoping MAHA and Karp will start focusing on this. Karp’s products are great. But I think he should set the entrepreneurship aside and focus on teaching people how to feed themselves, not just buy the right stuff off the shelves.

I couldn't agree more. Packaged foods are OK once in a while if they're relatively healthy but "real food" grown and produced according to nature and then cooked in your own kitchen is really where it's at!

symbiotically's avatar

Well, at least there are already tons of advocates all over the web already doing this kind of teaching. That's how people like Karp were able to look deeper. What there isn't a lot of, however, are products that actually aren't toxic. Many people don't have time to make their own foods, and many of the healthiest things you can make yourself, like kimchi and sourkraut, sourdough, etc., are very time consuming. I hope more people like Karp start investing and starting businesses around true health food.

I do buy artisanal products. But I don’t buy packaged meals. I buy ingredients and condiments that are probiotic that I don’t have the energy to make. I’m a Septic Shock survivor in recuperation for the past year. So I mail order sauerkraut and kimchi from David Klinginberger who owns The Brinery https://www.thebrinery.com/ I buy heritage pork from Porter Road. I buy Pure Indian products which is a family company in Princeton, NJ. They specialize in Ayurvedic cooking. Their products are all terrific. I highly recommend their probiotic mango and garlic pickles. https://www.pureindianfoods.com/ My point here is that I don’t make everything from scratch. I buy some products from companies who are excellent. This allows me to home-cook our meals. I cook up proteins at the beginning of the week, prep vegetables, cook up beans from Rancho Gordo. Then I’m able to make salads, soups, braises and stir fries very quickly and easily. My husband has to watch his glucose so I no longer bake bread which I used to always do. He now buys Ezekial bread. I’ve written about my Recuperation Cuisine here — you’ll see I consider pleasure a super nutrient along with all the other ones. https://pollysnewsletter.substack.com/

Tuck school MBA, 1989 here. I was the only American girl there who cooked food from fresh sources. Everyone else turned their noses up because they were far too important to 'waste time' in the kitchen. That was for stupid housewives.

100% of our health crisis stems from pride, laziness, ignorance and misplaced priorities. And it won't end until people do the hard work of learning to cook and to honor their family tables.

"How did our food system get so toxic? Primarily because of capitalism"

This is simply wrong. "Capitalism" was euthanized by the financial coup d'etat in 1913, the passage of the Federal Reserve Act.

What we have endured since is CRONYISM.

truth seeker's avatar

There is absolutely no question that the Standard American Diet is garbage.

That was NOT NEWS 35 years ago. Karp suffered from what was then called

Yuppie Flu.

Removing toxins from the "food supply" is a huge step in the right direction, (glyphosate) not "gluten". Learning something about health then and now the way forward.

Avoidance strategies are useful but do not move the ball forward unless that

includes avoiding over 99% or Medical Doctors who are delivery boys for Big P.

The Renegade MD truthtellers are gaining momentum but a tiny fraction.

30 million dead from the mRNA quaxcine, a much larger # disabled...

For health concerns (not including emergency care) best to look for another discipline

that will unlikely be covered by "insurance", a criminal racket with few exeptions.

I totally agree with you. If we want to make everyone healthier we must get rid of chemical companies and big farma! They have screwed up literally everything from the ground up! What really opened my eyes was reading “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration” by Weston A Price.

truth seeker's avatar

you are going to love this: Winning! A State in India is going ALL Organic!!

From a Telegram post, cannot reference better, searching may be the easiest method to verify.

truth seeker's avatar

Price Pottinger discovered by accident, the reality of feeding processed "food"

to cats and seeing a first generation health decline. That led to other studies

to include jawbone changes the second generation.

That was prior to the "chemical" revolution that is now history.

We are trying to claw it back as we move forward.

Organic certification has nothing to do with testing for heavy metals the consequence of modern farming and industrial processes'.

Not even remotely surprising that Mr. Karp is caught up in this mess.

Most people have no idea of the magnitude we are dealing with.

Really enjoyed learning about Karp, had no idea. Thank you!

Well maybe not the entire system! You go onto note that corporations have responded in a corrective way! Also, it's helpful to note that the 'american public' are not all clueless. Many of us have been striving for better fresh foods for years. The more (who are aware), the merrier!!

( “How did our food system get so toxic? Primarily because of capitalism and the profit motive. The entire system needs to change....")

I love this community of like minded people who research and don’t take conventional propaganda that food is not powerful enough to cure and medicine (mostly toxic) is the only way to mitigate a disease. We CAN cure our diseases and ailments. I’ve reversed a chronic illness that most succumb to opioid addiction and a relegated life indoors and in bed. I have a full life and no addictions to medications and used food and alternative health techniques. Our voices need to get louder to reverse this madness! Too many people are suffering. Thanks to Jason and Del and Ron and Bobbie and Food Babe and so many others who are making moves!!

nice story but I've seen on the web that their chocolate bars have high levels of heavy metals so I'm a little conflicted

Suzy Cue's avatar

Yeah. One more item to make sure and not eat.

Anna Lafferty's avatar

I told my sister about it and she was really disappointed. There's something amiss at every turn it seems sometimes but I'm finding my way through it all with the help of many substack reads!

truth seeker's avatar

what is amiss is that people know precious little about health

Heavy metal toxicity was well known 35 years ago.

Thinking a person who destroyed his own health knowing nothing about is

is a good choice for a food product, takes it to another level.

Anna Lafferty's avatar

It requires individual responsibility to figure out what's healthy and I'm glad I'm finding people who are more aware than others in that regard. Still, it will be an ongoing exploration for me.

Linda's avatar

Federal regulation should be keeping food safe.

Anna Lafferty's avatar

yes, but currently I can't rely on that.

Lori's avatar

yup, Mammavation ranks HU chocolate poorly due to very high lead levels and cadmium.

Anna Lafferty's avatar

I've learned I have to research everything!!

Lori's avatar

Same. I read all labels and have learned that many companies do not always place on packaging that their products are bioengineered. I called Hersheys and was told all their products are bioengineered except their chocolate morsels.

Anna Lafferty's avatar

Our school went on class trips to the Hershey factory - never knew any of that!

Lori's avatar

Why would they announce it as it would affect profits. I have long since dropped purchasing any Hershey products since they are in effect, poisoning our children.

Anna Lafferty's avatar

Understood. Don't buy them either.

Letsrock's avatar

Poisoning anyone who consumes their nasty products!

truth seeker's avatar

testing for heavy metals requires a certified lab and someone willing to pay for the assay. That is exactly why the Health Ranger has an ISO certified lab.

Bless you, Jason, for your journey & now journey with MAHA

Hu chocolate products have tested high for lead and cadmium by Tamara Rubin in independent lab testing. Regardless, not impressed to see MAHA promoting products and businesses. Seems like an infomercial.

VictorDianne Watson's avatar

A great story, and one that is very encouraging for those wanting to reduce their chronic diseases.

Lori's avatar

So glad that Jason was able to heal himself through dietary change and found his true calling. Happy he is on board with MAHA as a crusader for excellent health through diet.

That said, HU chocolate bars are very high in lead and cadmium per Mammavation ranking.

Also his bread is made of tapioca starch which has a high glycemic index causing a rapid increase in blood sugar and insulin release. Food for thought.

truth seeker's avatar

As you point out, know something about health is a requisite.

Jason unfortunately is a sophomore.

Here is a source of excellent info, yes it's "bloody good" trust me (I don't work for a government 😉)

https://www.orthomolecular.org/

Orthomolecular medicine describes the practice of preventing and treating disease by providing the body with optimal amounts of substances which are natural to the body.

"Orthomolecular treatment does not lend itself to rapid drug-like control of symptoms, but patients get well to a degree not seen by tranquilizer therapists who believe orthomolecular therapists are prone to exaggeration. Those who've seen the results are astonished."

Just about every food group has been demonized: fats, animal proteins, carbs (even with fiber). Now sugar is evil and causes cancer.

I try to eat healthy, but I do have a "sweet tooth". I've read about what makes sugar bad, but it's hard for me to trust studies and articles, even though they seem plausible. There is sugar in most things (not even counting added sugar). I think the amount counts, and what else I'm eating. I drink coffee, tea, and water, all without sugar. I'm normal weight, don't have diabetes, and I'm healthy except for osteoarthritis.
