We so agree! And applaud the Appalachian states for their work in this area. Much of wellness is hyperlocal (personal lifestyle). It will just take some time to build out the infrastructure for truly localizing food and medicine. America may take health as an economic strategy one day!
thank you for this hopeful well written article! Hearing about meaningful changes in farming practices, farmers, hospitals, schools and neighbors supporting and encouraging good health is the step. i would love to see info-mercials about eating healthy instead of pharmaceuticals anyday!
Some obese people I know really don't want to change what they're used to eating... the knowledge is available but they want their fried food, creamy dressings, white flour products etc etc. City folk who have all the access to better choices and know they have a problem, but they carry on their habits. I wonder if the people in this article are similar, because the conversation about how to make healthy choices has been going on for decades now.
As I read, I kept hoping to see herbicide and pesticide free local produce. As RFK said: "clean food and healthy soil". There's not going to be any significant change in the health of the populace if the local produce is sprayed with pesticides and the soil with herbicides. These are chemicals that cause significant harm to the body that can result in cancer and a host of other chronic and acute illnesses. This needs to be impressed upon the state leaders and farmers by the MAHA group.
Hi Jennifer, I just read your post about the KY Agricultural Summit held 10 days ago. I am one of the Weston A. Price Foundation chapter leaders (westonaprice.org) for KY, I host a "clean" food group on Facebook (facebook.com/realfoodky) where farmers and foodies can connect, I manage a food buying club in central KY featuring raw milk and dairy, pastured meats and eggs delivering weekly to 7 drops from Ashland to the Bluegrass airport. Somehow, I did not hear about this! How do I make sure I and our farmers and foodies be notified of other events you produce? Thank you!
A lot of it is because that’s what’s in the grocery store! Not to mention the fact that Dollar General is the grocery store for a lot of rural people. Talk about poor food choices, that’s all it offers. And this whole high fat low carb living has helped to drive the obesity epidemic. It’s a double whammy.

Many are into alcohol and most likely the young into sodas, which are health destructive. Educating the people about nutrition would be a big step. People don't think or connect ...about what happens internally, when they eat wrong or drink the wrong beverages. Women particularly, are figure conscious...and if they knew that by eating more fruits and vegetables, they would look more attractive. It could make a difference, Our educational system should teach nutrition, beginning in first grade, but it might conflict with the Industries promoting processed food, alcohol and soda.
Please also start promoting what the ancients already knew....onions kill viruses and garlic kills bad bacteria in your body. I first tested the onion on my stress induced chicken pox outbreaks around my nose (injured from a car accident related surgery). At the first sign of tingling, I applied the juice of a fresh cut white onion. I put the pieces in a sandwich baggie on the kitchen table and every time I walked by, I would rub a piece of onion on my tingly spot. After two hours the virus was dead. I repeated it about a year later during a stressful time and I have had no breakouts since (13 years ago). When I caught COVID in October 2020, I used the onion to get my smell back (sniffed it for 8 hours and finally I could smell it). I can stop a cold if I start using it the moment one nostril starts to run (try it). I sniff it and put the juice under my tongue where it is absorbed directly into my bloodstream. I caught COVID the 2nd time in 2022 and unfortunately was out running errands when the symptoms started. Symptoms had a 2 hour head start and I was already miserable when I started the treatment. I fought COVID for four long miserable hours by laying a saucer with a slice of onion on my pillow next to my nose and every now and then scraping the back of my finger nails across the onion slice to pool the juice on them and then swipe it under my tongue. It was a battle, but at the end of the four hours I could tell it was over. That was on a Friday night and the next morning I was able to handle my business at our family Christmas Party (with a mask). That Monday, when I found out some others had found out they had COVID at the party, I went in and got tested. It was positive for COVID. So proof that it kills COVID. Just think how many people could have been saved, if those two doctors had not been silenced in California that spoke out at the beginning of COVID. They said treat it like any other virus, eat chicken noodle soup (I would add fresh cut onions & garlic to it), stay hydrated, take Vit C, D3, and zinc with copper and stay in bed until you are well. Instead people were hospitalized and isolated. The 90 year old woman that survived it had her daughter sneak in some homemade chicken noodle soup. Makes you wonder?!?
They can start by rescuing their farms from being sold to AI data centers builders. Be certain they are being sold to other independent farmers!!!! Stay educated on bioengineering and work to destroy it!
A large component driving farmer depression and poor mental health is their pro-inflammatory and junk diet. Dietary changes need to start with the farmer and that is as big challenge. Most middle aged farmers are obese to morbidly obese. All the talk therapy in the world will not correct this pro-disease diet.
